Alan B. Chaves, 80, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at his residence in Viera, Florida. He grew up in New York City, graduated from Bloomfield College and Seminary in Bloomfield, NJ and was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1959. His first pastorate was in Jersey City, NJ followed by a 27 year pastorate at the First Presbyterian Church of East Williamsburgh in Ridgewood, Queens, NY. He had a second career in higher education in university admissions. He retired as a Dean at Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus in 2003. He continued his church work in retirement, serving several congregations as interim minister in NJ and Florida. Alan married Joan Mezger in 1959 and they enjoyed 55 years together. In addition to Joan, he is survived by his four children and their spouses, ten grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Rockledge Presbyterian Church, 921 Rockledge Drive, Rockledge, FL. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to either the American Heart Association (http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/) or the Humane Society (http://www.humanesociety.org/).
