Alan Leroy Runyan

On October 6th, 2023 Alan "Al" Leroy Runyan finally laid down his armor after battling prostate cancer for 18 years. He is now at peace. Al was born on August 17, 1945, in Maryville, MO, to Winston and Edna Runyan. Raised on a farm in Iowa with his younger brother Boyd, Al carried the farm values instilled in him throughout his life. He was a quiet and easy-going man who possessed integrity, a strong work ethic, and a solid moral compass. Al graduated from Iowa State University then was immediately drafted into the Vietnam War where he served in the 4th Infantry Division from 1968 to 1969. His dedication and service to his country were commendable. After moving to Colorado in 1971, Al began his nearly 40-year career in steel detailing, primarily working for Rutledge Steel and KL&A. He was dedicated to his work, and contributed to many interesting, well-known projects through the years. Al and Lynn were introduced by their mutual friends Roger and Selma. After their first date on October 20,1984, Al knew he wanted to marry her. He always said that meeting Lynn that day changed his life, and each year he celebrated that special day by buying her a massive bouquet of roses. They tied the knot on June 27, 1987; two very different people that complemented the best in each other. Al fully embraced his new role as a husband and stepfather to Lynn's daughters, Alyssa and Amber. He loved them as his own and took great pride in their accomplishments. The addition of grandchildren, Ayden and Dominic, brought out an unseen softer side of him. He was more open-minded, playful, and would even share the last cinnamon roll (a true sign of love). Al loved golf and was in his element on the course. He also played darts on a league out of the Office Lounge. Baseball was his favorite sport to watch, regardless of who was playing, however, the Cardinals and Royals were teams he followed from childhood. He had a special fondness for woodworking, a skill he learned from his father. Al's creativity and craftsmanship were evident in the many pieces of furniture, gifts, and other special requests from his wife, Lynn and family. Other things he enjoyed included ice cream, Mexican food, especially margaritas, and gameshows. Upon retirement, Al and Lynn purchased a motorhome, lovingly referred to as their "Little House on Wheels." They spent 11 years traveling as ‘snowbirds’, exploring different parts of the southern United States, making new friends, and marveling at the beauty of our country. They also traveled often within Colorado and loved taking the grandkids on new adventures. In 2005 Al was diagnosed with prostate cancer but remained resilient through multiple treatments and procedures. He kept a quiet reserve of strength and even through the last very difficult months, was gracious and kind. The family is especially grateful for the loving, professional care provided by Visiting Angels and Pathways Hospice during this time. Al’s parents, Winston and Edna Runyan, preceded him in death. Family surviving include: Lynn Joy Runyan, Wife, Loveland, Colorado Boyd Runyan (Carolyn), Brother, Castle Rock, Colorado Alyssa McConkey San Filippo (Thomas), Daughter, Fort Collins, Colorado Amber Epstein (Daniel), Daughter, Fort Collins, Colorado Ayden Meikel, Granddaughter, Fort Collins, Colorado Dominic Epstein, Grandson, Fort Collins, Colorado Al will be laid to rest in the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Red Cross of Larimer County or the Gary Sinise Foundation, both organizations that Al supported.
