Albert LeRoy Schott

July 14th, 1932 - September 1st, 2024

Albert (Al) Leroy Schott

Albert (Al) Leroy Schott, 92, was born July 14, 1932, and passed away September 1, 2024, at Grace Pointe Senior Care in Greeley. He was formerly of Kersey, CO.

Al was born to Philip and Anna (Meyer) Schott in Hillrose, CO, and he was the oldest of 8 children. He moved to Kersey in 1937 with his family and attended Valley View School in Kersey.

Al entered the U.S. Navy in March 1952 and was discharged in February 1956. During this time, he was stationed in California and served on the U.S.S. Luzon.

On March 14, 1954, Al married Mary Mayfield at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Together, they moved to California and lived in Long Beach, San Francisco, and San Diego where their daughter, Jane, was born.

In March 1956, they moved back to Kersey where Al joined his family business farming and milking cows. After moving back to Colorado, Al and Mary added to their family with the births of their son, Ken, in 1959 and daughter, Shari, in 1962.

After selling the family farm, Al started his business, Al’s Custom Interior Trim. He trimmed more than 400 houses. Al also put himself through refrigeration school.

Throughout his life, Al was very proud of his service in the Navy and often wore a hat representing his ship. He and Mary attended as many U.S.S. Luzon reunion trips as they could. Later, Al participated in an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Al was very proud of his farming roots and appreciated the words of Paul Harvey’s speech, “So God Made a Farmer.”

Al was a faithful member of St. John’s Church attending Church every Sunday he was able. He was a member of the Danish Gang at St. John’s and performed maintenance and yard work for the Church. Every Sunday after Church, he entertained his family on the way home by playing polka music.

Al enjoyed going “up the hill” to Blackhawk and Central City with his family, especially Mary and her sisters Mable and Margie.

Al loved his family fiercely and taught them all the love of Jesus and the value of hard work. But he always made sure to save time for fun. He loved spending time “piddling around” in his shop or his office. He was a skilled carpenter who could make nearly anything out of wood. He could often be found sneaking an afternoon nap.

Al is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mary; his children, Jane Chittenden of Kersey; Ken (Diane) Schott of Greeley; Shari (Duane) Naibauer of Kersey; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and brother Bill (Agnes) Schott of Kersey. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, 1 sister, grandson Dustin Naibauer, and son-in-law Al Chittenden.

A visitation will be held at 9:00 on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 3815 W 20th Street, Greeley, CO, with services at 10:00 and a reception at the Church following the interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 3205 W 28th Street, Greeley, Colorado.
