Mrs. Anastasia Stephanopoulos Anastasia Mataranga Stephanopoulos, 92, died peacefully in her sleep at Northside Hospital, St. Petersburg, FL, November 21, 2004. She was the wife of the late Father George Stephanopoulos who died in 1985. Born in Nehori, Elias Greece, March 2, 1912 and married in 1934, she traveled to the United States in 1939 with her 3 young children to join her husband who had been called by then Archbishop Athenagoras a year earlier to serve the Greek Orthodox Church of Sts. Constantine and Helen in Great Falls, Montana. She is survived by a son, The Rev. Dr. Robert G. Stephanopoulos, Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York City and daughter-in-law, Nikki, two daughters, Joyce Varidin and son-in-law Dr. Plato Varidin, and Jennie Stephanopoulos-Cheeks of St. Petersburg, FL, a daughter-in-law, Effy Stephanopoulos of Portland, OR, 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews here and in Greece. Her son, Father Elias Stephanopoulos and grandson, Dr. Mark Varidin, predeceased her. In the 50 years of their ministry, Father George and Anastasia served parishes in Great Falls, where he also served as a missionary priest to Greek Orthodox faithful from Montana to Canada; Lorain, OH; Cleveland, OH; Farrell, PA; Danville, VA; Salt Lake City, UT; Bradenton and St. Petersburg, FL. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at 10:00 am at St. Stefanos Church, 3600 76th Street North, St. Petersburg, FL 33710. Interment will be in Royal Palm Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Stefanos Greek Church or the Fr. Elias Stephanopoulos Memorial Fund, c/o Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 3131 N.E. Glisan Street, Portland, OR 97232 in lieu of flowers.
