World War II Naval Veteran, Andrew Dewitt Adcock, "Andy", 90, passed away on May 3, 2011 at Renaissance Gardens in Silver Spring, Maryland, due to chronic kidney disease and congestive heart failure. Andy was born in Turner's Station, Kentucky on February 10, 1921, to Mary Margaret and Albert "LeGros" Adcock. He had two older sisters, Mary "Nancy" Moore and Margaret Hayes, both of whom passed away some years ago. Andy is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Yolanda "Peggy" Adcock, of Riderwood, Silver Springs, MD; a daughter, Mary Margaret Ingram, of Ellicott City, MD; a son, Eugene Patrick Adcock, of Crofton, MD; four grandchildren – Kevin Ingram, Keith Ingram, Laura Wirick, and Sara Lipton; and one great grandchild – Mabrey Ingram. Andy Adcock retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1958 after a distinguished 20-year active duty Naval career that witnessed Pearl Harbor five days following the 12/7/41 attack aboard the USS Saratoga. He survived the torpedoed sinking of the USS John Penn off Lunga Point, Guadalcanal on Friday, August 13, 1943, and he also witnessed nuclear bomb tests off the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Following his active Naval career, he also served 10 additional years in the Naval Reserves. Andy moved to Damascus, MD to work for defense contractors, work his garden, and host weekend get-togethers involving poker chips and playing cards. He was an optimistic gardener, who bought more than he planted and planted more than he tended. His favorite activity was to be visited by friends and family for some pleasant conversation and lots of laughs.
