Andrew "Andy" Michael Schreiner
November 19th, 1928 - October 16th, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew “Andy” M. Schreiner, 95, who passed away on October 16, 2024 at Mount Saint Francis Nursing Facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado surrounded by his family and the beautiful Colorado Springs mountainside.
Andy was born on November 19, 1928 in Graham County, Kansas to parents Windlin Schreiner and Salome (Knoll) Schreiner.
Andy proudly enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 - 1952 where he bravely fought in the Korean War, 94th Military Police Battalion in Pusan, Korea. He earned the rank of SGT (T) - MPC (Technical Sergeant Military Police) and was awarded the Korean War Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.
Andy married Leita Allen-Schaller and from this union they raised three loving children.
After his honorable discharge Andy apprenticed in Topeka, KS under German Master Shoe Cobbler George Reuter; and opened his first shop in 1957 (White Lakes Mall, Topeka, KS). After moving his family to Colorado Springs he opened Andy's Shoe Repair (2234 E. Pikes Peak Ave. Colorado Springs, CO) in 1970 which was a thriving business until Andy's retirement in 2007. Not only did he repair shoes, boots and leather goods, he also custom dyed shoes and performed orthopedic corrections and prescriptions.
Andy enjoyed fishing in the Colorado Mountains with his family and best friend Calvin Hyche. He also was a “car guy” and owned a restored everything from a Jaguar, Fury and even an Isetta. He also had a passion for old clocks and clock repair. He was an avid “Polka Dancer” and member of the International Polka (Dance) Club. His passion for dance was contagious….and he danced until the very end.
Preceded in death are Andy's wife Leita Allen-Schaller (deceased in July 2015), parents Windlin Schreiner and Salome Schreiner, sisters Mary Hokr, Josephine Ward & brother Robert Schreiner.
Those left behind to cherish Andy's memory are children Victoria Hyche (Colorado Springs, CO), Kevin Schreiner (Longmont, CO), Conwan “CJ” Schreiner (Monument, CO), grandchildren Erin Ong (Larkspur, CO), Brian Hawbaker (Boulder, CO), Whitney Ballard (Colorado Springs, CO), and brother Bill Schreiner (Ft. Worth, TX).
A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at 10:00AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 2650 Parish View, Colorado Springs, CO 80919. A committal service with military honors to follow at 12:00PM at Pikes Peak National Cemetery 10545 Drennan Rd. Colorado Springs, CO 80925.
