Anthony J. Sommella
January 8th, 1923 - April 20th, 2012
Anthony "Tony" Sommella , affectionately called "Sparky", was born on January 8, 1923 in Gloversville, New York to Frank and Carmilla Curcio Sommella. Anthony was called by his heavenly father on Friday, April 20, 2012 in Yorktown, VA. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Wilson in 1951 and was happily married for 60 years. They have three daughters, Susan and Robert Sardelli, Gloversville, N.Y. , Catherine and Clifton Cole, Gloversville, N.Y. and Lisa and Jeffrey McCoulskey, Yorktown, VA.. Tony has six grandchildren, one great granddaughter, 2 nieces and 4 great nephews. Anthony was preceded by his parents and sister, Marie Caputo. Tony attended Oswego State University in N.Y. He received both a Bachelor degree and Master's degree in Education. He taught History, Math, Special Education and Technology for thirty one years at Estee Middle School in Gloversville, N. Y. He was also the Director of the Gloversville Adult Education Program for many years. He taught English and Citizenship to immigrants. After retirement, he substituted at B.O.C.E.S. where he taught all subjects. He really enjoyed teaching. In between getting a college education and teaching school, he served in World War II and the Korean War. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and loved serving his country. Tony was an avid reader and on bowling teams, which he received numerous trophies. He played golf and twice made a "hole in one". He was a terrific dancer. He belonged to the Elks Club, Concordia Club, Moose Club and Teacher's Association. He did a lot of work for the community such as Red Cross and for his church. He was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Gloversville, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a Prayer Service will be held 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, followed at 10:00 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St; Gloversville. Interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Donations can be made in his name to Hospice of Virginia, 825 Diligence Drive, Suite 226, Newport News, VA. 23606.
