Thomas, Ariel A., 92, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday, June 3, 2006 at Bay Pines VA Medical Center. Born in Woonsocket, RI, he retired here in 1983 from Atlanta, GA. He served as a Major in the U. S. Army during WWII. He received his B.S. in Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his M.S. from the University of Illinois. His career as an Environmental Engineer included the State of Illinois, MIT, Water Pollution Control, and Metcalf & Eddy, Inc of Boston for 29 years, where he consulted on many environmental projects. He was a member of Richard C. Maclaurin Masonic Lodge in Cambridge, MA, Northside Lodge # 283 F&AM in St. Petersburg, Scottish Rite and Egypt Temple Shrine, both of Tampa, as well as several professional societies. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. He was predeceased by his brother, Alton P. Thomas, M.D. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Avis; a daughter, Ann McKenzie, Indianapolis, IN; a brother, Philip E. Thomas, Jr, Manville, RI; two granddaughters, Amy McKenzie, Franklin, NC and Alice Morical, Zionsville, IN; three great grandchildren, Lea, Scott and Kyle Morical and several nieces and nephews.
