Arturo Alfonso Gutierrez

January 16, 1953 - August 17, 2024

Arturo “Art” Gutierrez, 71, of Evergreen, Colorado, died August 17, 2024, following a short illness.

Art was born in Mexicali, Mexico to circus performers Arthur and Blanca (Campa) Gutierrez. He was raised in Los Angeles and graduated from Garfield High School in 1971. Art enlisted in the United States Air Force after a semester of college and met his wife Barbara at their first duty station.

Art and Barbara were married in Mountain Home, Idaho on May 4, 1974. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Central New England College of Technology in 1989 and served for 26 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1998 as a communications specialist with the 302nd Air Wing. His civilian career in telecommunications saw over forty years with AT&T working in long-distance signaling.

Service was a cornerstone of Art’s life, with over 60 years of membership in the Boy Scouts of America. He worked at Lake Arrowhead Boy Scout Camps, now the Hubert Eaton Scout Reservation, as youth staff and went on to serve in many leadership positions at the unit and district levels, as well as with the Archdiocese of Denver Committee on Scouting. Art was awarded the Silver Beaver, the council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America, in 2014. He was a member of American Legion Post 2001, Blue Spruce Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus John P. McManamen Council #6905, Wilmot Elementary School WatchDOGS, and the Rotary Club of Conifer. Art was also often found volunteering at events in our mountain area.

His greatest accomplishments include fifty years of marriage to his wife, Barbara; earning a bachelor’s degree as a working adult; the time he almost ran away with the circus; and his four kids, who he bragged about any chance he had.

Art is survived by his wife Barbara; children Amy (Branden) Baker of Morrison, Melissa of Evergreen, David (Haley) of Evergreen, and Sarah (Drew) Thorstenson of Fort Collins; grandchildren Eli Crawford, Austin Baker, Maria Baker, Cayden Gutierrez, and Charlee Gutierrez; his father Arthur Gutierrez of Los Angeles; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Thomas Gutierrez, mother Blanca Campa Hall, and sister Irma Gutierrez.

A funeral Mass will be held at 4:30 PM Friday, September 13 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4291 Evergreen Parkway, followed by a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made in Art’s memory to a charitable cause of the giver’s choice.

Here are some photos of Dad in junior high and high school. The two single photos are his sixth grade (April 1964; khaki collared shirt) and possibly seventh or eighth grade (olive collarless shirt) photos from Belvedere Junior High School, and a portrait with his sister Irma that I would guess to be taken around 1967 or 1968.

My husband and I worked with Art at AT&T in Colorado and he was a dedicated worker and friend. I (Judy) had the pleasure of working with Art in Framingham, Massachusetts before we both got transferred to Denver, Colorado. He was a good friend and fellow worker. He will be sorely missed. Bill and I extend our sincere condolences and sympathies to his wife and family. May he rest in peace in Heaven now.

Arturo and I worked together for a number of years. He was extremely smart and extremely kind. It was not unusual for him to show up at my desk with a snack and a bottle of orange soda when he started his shift. He was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever known and I am proud to have had considered him a friend.

I served with Art and Barb at Mountain Home AFB in 1972-1976. I was honored to watch Art and Barb's friendship grow into love and marriage while I was there. Art was a great guy. We had fun working together. I'm glad we were able to reconnect a few years ago. I will miss him.

I first met Art as a Wilmot WatchDOG and then years later as he volunteered for Seniors4Wellness' luncheons, usually on coffee duty. He attended almost all of the Game Days in a volunteer capacity. Art was THE volunteer for so many organizations! If he was ever unable to attend S4W events, he would write a lengthy email and it usually included many other commitments he had. He gave so unselfishly of his time and I'll never forget him.

Condolences on your loss of a truly great man. Art was a uniquely positive role model for me during my time as a boy scout for troop 737. His kindness and humor showed me how to be a positive influence on my community, family and friends. His wit, humor and gentleness will be missed. I'm sure that there are countless children and adults whose lives were made better and more joyful by Art's influence. I feel very lucky to have known him.

Art was such a generous guy, helping the Scouts in so many ways and showing the boys by his actions how to be a good man. He was supportive of everyone’s efforts, he never forgot parents, and for many years he organized the Memorial Day flags for our local cemeteries to honor veterans. Art will always be part of our family’s Scouting experience and he will live in our memories, always. Thanks Mr. Gutz, from Eagle Scouts Andrew Summar & Luke Summar and their parents John & Kim

I’m so thankful that dad was able to attend many of our big celebrations this past year from my doctoral hooding ceremony to Austin’s graduation from high school, and Austin earning his Boy Scout Eagle award. Dad was so, so proud of everyone in the family. I never could get him to correct my job title, but it made me chuckle every time I saw him post on the CSU Facebook page. There were so many places he wanted to visit in Fort Collins; I’ll make sure that Drew and I make those visits for him. We love you so much, dad. I hope you’re visiting all of your loved ones in heaven, enjoying some damn good Mexican food. Love Always, SB
