Arthur C Hack

May 11th, 1949 - July 27th, 2024

Arthur Hack, age 75, of Portsmouth, Virginia, died unexpectedly at sea during vacation on July 27, 2024, following several years of illness. He is preceded in death by his parents George and Rosa Hack. He is survived by his brother George Hack, his loving, supportive partner and caregiver wife of 54 years, Janet Hack and his children Arthur (Christina)Hack, Jr., Marcus (Leticia) Hack, and Jasmine Hack as well as four granddaughters, four nephews and two nieces.

During his educational pursuits, Arthur’s early education was in local Virginia elementary schools. He attended and graduated from Granby High in 1968, continuing at the community college the next year, but his education was interrupted with military service. His time in service led him to various continents enriching both him and his family with lifetime friendships. While his time in the service contributed to his education and future careers, it was many years later before he was able to complete his associate degree with honors.

While Arthur was a private man, he had an intense passion for reading, computer games, puzzles, and horses as well as his beloved cats. For a time, horseback riding and dressage occupied much of his time when he was away from home on work assignments. His hobbies included leather working, woodworking, collecting knives, swords, family coins, clocks and watches.

His love of collecting led to a significant bevy of canes, hats, Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses. As a young, curious boy he was known to take apart his brother’s toys, to the ire of all, leading to a life of problem solving. Following his military career, he entered his civilian career in the maintenance of utilities and ended with technical writing. His time spent with his technical team at the end of his career left a satisfying  and lasting impression on him.

Leticia Flores-Hack

In memory of Arthur, the best father-in-law a girl could ask for. When my brother was dying, Arthur and Janet drove me from the airport to my parents’ house, and just being in Arthur’s presence was a profound comfort. His kindness, gentleness, and love were evident in every interaction, and his unwavering support for his family is something I will always cherish. Even if I may have disappointed him at times, he always treated me with the utmost kindness and respect. Knowing Arthur and seeing his traits in his son only deepened my love for my husband. I thank him for showing my husband how to love. I will miss his earthly presence deeply and hope his spirit visits us with his comforting energy.

Having known Art, Sr. since shortly after he met Janet, I can attest that he loved her from the beginning. They shared and embraced their life together with precious abandon. Janet and I met at 9. She knew she loved Art from the start. They were made for each other.
