Chaplain Virgil Wood, US Army Retired, 94, passed away June 30, 2023 in Tacoma, WA. He was born near Jamestown, North Dakota on April 26, 1929 to Arthur and Irene Clemens Wood. Virgil is survived by his wife Donna Wood of 43 years. He also survived by his children of his first wife Jeanne Hemstock; Susan Pearson (Erik), Elizabeth Badgett (Bruce) and Jonathan Wood (Christine), 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Virgil was preceded in death by his son David Wood. He is also survived by Donna’s children; Theresa Schaffer (John), Dahn Clemens (Mary), Brad Clemens, Janice Stanek (Joe) and family members. Virgil was a proud veteran, serving 26 years in the US Army, 20 years as a Chaplain. He retired in 1978 as a Lieutenant Colonel. His service took him to assignments in Europe and Korea as well as many posts in the United States. After his military retirement, Virgil became a drug and alcohol counselor, and served on the pastoral team at several Lutheran congregations in Elma, WA, Tacoma, WA and Port Orchard, WA. He also enjoyed gardening, family, exercise and the outdoors. His memorial service with military honors will be Saturday July 29, 2023 at 11:00 am at First Lutheran Community Church in Port Orchard, WA.
