Barbara Jo Buchanan

Barbara Jo Buchanan, 67, of Gate City, embarked on her final adventure on July 8, 2016, from her residence, over the hill and through the woods, in the mountains that she loved. Barb led a life of service having served her country in the Air Force and her community as a volunteer at Hope House. Barb never met a stranger and became many things to many people. To some, a kind encounter, to others a rock in a tumultuous time. Barb was a friend, companion, confidant, sister, mother, the meanest grandma in the world, and a child of God. She is woefully missed. Barb is preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and sister, Rosie. Survivors include her daughter, Kim Buchanan and wife Chantelle; son, James Buchanan and wife Andrea; daughter, Jan Casados; grandchildren, Steven, Alexis, Candice, Sage, and Joelle; brother, James Shortt and wife Sharon; sister, Maggie McLeod and husband David; along with many others dear to her heart. The family will receive friends from 12 pm to 2 pm on Friday, July 15, 2016 at Mt. Carmel U.M.C. A funeral service will follow with Rev. Craig Needham officiating. Graveside services will follow in Jackson-Lewis cemetery in Taylor Valley, VA near Damascus, VA. The family requests donations at https://www.gofundme.com/pb2gzr44 in lieu of flowers.
