Barbara Mary Dermody, 80, of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away Sunday May 8, 2016. Barbara was born March 18, 1936 in Lake Crystal, MN the daughter of Charles Evenson and Lucille (Nelson) Evenson. As a young girl she lived on a farm with her family and had a fondness for animals including horses. She attended Garden City High School (now Wellcome Memorial) where she met her future husband Larry J. Dermody, graduating in 1954. She attended Naeve Hospital School of Nursing in Albert Lea, MN, graduating in the spring of 1957. She then worked at Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato, MN. Barbara and Larry Dermody were united in marriage on September 21, 1958 in Lake Crystal, MN. While Larry attended dental school Barbara worked in the radiation therapy unit at the University of Minnesota. Daughter Laura was born in 1963 at Camp Pendleton, CA while Larry served in the Navy. Son Thomas was born in 1965 in Pasadena, CA while Larry was in oral surgery residency at USC – Los Angeles County General Hospital. Barbara and Larry moved to Los Altos, CA in 1968 and then to Cupertino, CA the following year where they purchased a home. In 1971, Barbara gave birth to son David in Mountain View, CA. Barbara obtained her real estate license and sold homes in the South Bay Area for several years. In 1984 Barbara became a Navy wife for a second time when Larry left private oral surgery practice and re-entered the Navy. Barbara, Larry and their two sons moved to Naples, Italy. While stationed in Italy, the Dermody family travelled extensively in Europe. Barbara and family returned from Italy in 1987 and settled in Pensacola, FL and then Rockville, MD and then finally Coronado, CA in 1993. In 2000, Larry retired from the Navy and the couple moved to the Summerlin area of Las Vegas, NV where they built a beautiful home. During retirement Barbara and Larry took numerous trips across the county to visit relatives, children and grand children in Minnesota, Alabama, Florida and California. Barbara's culinary skills were renowned and her kitchen was her domain. While living in Italy she obtained a number of recipes that have become family favorites. She was also had a skilled eye for interior design and was active in a community sewing group where she created a number of beautiful quilts. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Charles Lee Evenson and sister Mercedes Chamberlen. Barbara is survived by her husband Larry J. Dermody of Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived by her daughter Laura Wilson, son Thomas Dermody and son David Dermody as well as nine grandchildren. A visitation will be held beginning at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, followed by a Funeral at 3:00 PM and then a reception, all at Kraft-Sussman Funeral Services, 3975 S. Durango Drive, Suite 104, Las Vegas, NV 89147. Burial will be at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City on Thursday, May 12 at 12:00 pm.
