Barbara Kirkpatrick of Syracuse, N.Y. passed away on August 9th, 2019. An informal celebration of Barbara’s life will be held from 2-4:30 on 9/7 at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3800 E. Genesee Street in Syracuse. Barbara was born in Elmira, NY to Thomas E. and Alice [Hoover] Kirkpatrick on 11/25/45. She held a BA from SUNY Fredonia and an MSW from Syracuse University. Barbara retired from the Onondaga County Department of Mental Health in 2010 after a 45-year career as a social worker. She was a committed feminist and activist who held several offices in the CNY and NYS Chapters of the National Organization for Women during her 35-year membership. Even during a long illness, she could often be spotted at protests and rallies in defense of peace and social justice. She will be missed for her scrappy political opinions, keen historical memory and consistent presence as an elections inspector. She enjoyed opera, bird watching and classical music. Barbara is survived by her life partner, Wendy Yost, sister, Kathleen Kirkpatrick, brother, Daniel Kirkpatrick (Debbie), 2 nieces, several cousins and many loyal and loving friends. Donations can be made in Barbara’s memory to CNY NOW, Beaver Lake Nature Center, Symphoria or the American Cancer Society. Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, 4612 S. Salina St., Syracuse, has care of the arrangemnets.
