Bernard James Oliver

May 4th, 1946 - March 29th, 2024

Bernard James “Jim” Oliver, Jr., 77, completed his earthly journey on March 29, 2024. Jim was born in Tucson, AZ to Bernard James, Sr. and Ruth (Gardner) Oliver on May 4, 1946. He is survived by his loving eternal companion, Karen, with whom he spent over 52 years of marriage. He is also warmly remembered by his six surviving children and their spouses: Peter (Maria) Oliver, Rebecca (Tom) Swegle, William (Laurel) Oliver, Carrie (Dee) Campbell, Benjamin (Rachel) Oliver, and Daniel Oliver; his sister, Betty Dargitz, and brothers; Ray (Jennifer Barliament) Oliver and Brian (Marcia) Oliver. Grandpa Oliver will also be missed by his eleven grandchildren. As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jim served in many assignments including: a two-and-a-half-year mission in Finland as a young man, primary teacher, and counselor in the bishopric. Jim earned the honor of Silver Beaver from the Boy Scouts of America after over 50 years of active leadership working with youth. Jim graduated from Rincon High School and later attended the University of Arizona. He retired as the owner of Tucson Radio & TV, where he started working at age 14. His lifetime of experience being self-employed helped him change lives as he worked as a service missionary at the church employment center. When his six children were young, he took time off to take them to Disneyland every year over rodeo vacation and also made great memories frequently camping with them on Mt. Lemmon. He also fulfilled his dream of traveling to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos with his wife. Jim also enjoyed being a part of the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association for many years. He is remembered for his love of coin collecting and dancing, his great wealth of knowledge in all subjects, kindness and service to others, dedication to family, and witty sense of humor. A service to celebrate Jim Oliver’s life will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 10:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Rincon Stake Center, 1655 S. Melpomene Way, Tucson, AZ 85748. Following the memorial services, he will be laid to rest at the Binghampton Cemetery.

Hi Karen and family. As you know, I worked forJim for many years at Tucson Radio & TV. That was my first real job. I must have met Jim & Karen through the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association - to be honest, I'm not sure how we met. I think Jim served as the TAAA Secretary for a time and also as editor of the newsletter. Working with Jim, I got to know the entire family. Jim was a wonderful boss and such a generous man. When I bought my first truck, i needed someone to co-sign on the.loan. Jim agreed to be the co-signer. Jim was so good natured and honest in his business dealings. He entrusted me with running the shop when he was.out on house calls. I look back fondly on those years at Tucson Radio & TV and all that I learned from that experience I thank Jim for that.
