Bernice Hartwig

Bernice Marie Hartwig age 87 passed away on Saturday August 28, 2021 in Veneta, Oregon at Morison Landing Foster Home under the care of Peace Health Hospice. Her daughter Linda Sledge was by her side when she very peacefully drew her last breath. Bernice was born to Ambrose and Edna (Twist) Canaday on July 6th 1934 in Crow, Oregon the youngest of 4 children. She attended Crow Elementary, and Crow High School. On August 31, 1952 she married Daniel "Dale" Hartwig. They made their home in the Crow area and raised 4 children and were married for 61 years when her beloved Dale passed away in 2013. Bernice's greatest joys were her family and her porcelain dolls that she took classes in Springfield, Oregon at "Ann's Doll Shop". She very patiently also sewed clothes for each doll. She made so many she began giving them away to family and friends. She also worked as a cook in the kitchen at Applegate Elementary from 1969-1979. In 1984 she was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer which she beat. She enjoyed Country music and was able to travel to Nashville, Tennessee on two different occasions and visit the "Grand Ole Opera" and other local sites in the area and stopped in Nebraska to see her family. Bernice is survived by her children all of Crow. Debbie Hartwig, Linda (Patrick) Sledge, Danny (Lee Ann) Hartwig, Karen (Jerry) Ott. She has seven grandchildren John (Melanie) Sullivan of Monroe, Travis (Krissy) Smith of Crow, Tami (Gared) Bloom of Crow, Kelli(Tim) Weese of Salem, Shawn Ott of Crow, Joseph Ott of Crow, and Jessica (Chase) Woodrum, of Eugene. Bernice had seven great grandchildren, Braeden Sledge, Brogan, Amira Smith, Logan and Rianna Weese, Eli Ott, and Zurada Woodrum. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents Ambrose and Edna Canaday, her siblings Margarie McCulloch, Wayne Canaday, and Vera Wood and grandchildren, Brett Hartwig, Marcy Smith,and Tara Smith. A graveside service will be held on Saturday September 11, 2021 at 11:00 at the Gates Cemetery in Crow. Visitation will be on Friday September 10, 2021 from 10:00-12:00 at Musgrove Family Mortuary located at 225 S. Danebo Avenue, Eugene A special Thank you goes out to Morison Landing and their entire care team and Peace health Hospice In lieu of flowers Bernice has requested memorial donation be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital and Peace health Hospice.
