RYDER Colonel Bertram Stillwell Ryder, USMC (Retired) On Friday, March 15, 2013 in McLean, VA. He was born on January 6, 1920 to Edward Clinton and Florence Bennett Ryder, on Ryders Lane in Brooklyn, New York. Husband of the late Janet Elizabeth Leech Ryder; father of Thomas Stillwell Ryder and the late John Ryder; father in law of Ann Ryder; grandfather of Edward Stillwell and Alicia Elizabeth Ryder. Col. Ryder earned a BA degree in Political Science from Colgate University in 1942, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He married Janet Elizabeth Leech on September 27, 1945 in Washington, DC. He earned a Master of Arts in Political Science from George Washington University in 1964. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-1968, earning such decorations as Marine Corps Reserve medal, American Campaign medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with two stars, World War II Victory medal, National Defense Service medal with one star, United National Service medal, Navy Commendation medal, Korean Service medal, Joint Service Commendation medal, and the Legion of Merit. Col. Ryder also held various positions at Colgate University from 1968-1985, ending as a member of the Board of Trustees and Trustee Emeritus. Graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 9:00am. Donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation
