Beth Louise Whitney

Beth Whitney, 98, of Hilton Head, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on August 27, 2018. Beth was born July 5, 1920 to the late Bess and Martin Amoss of Indiana. She and her husband of 63 years, Loren L. Whitney, retired to Hilton Head Island in 1981. Beth loved the lowcountry and explored the region, studied the history and wrote poetry describing the beauty of the area and its wildlife; she was an avid tennis player and enjoyed beach walking and gardening. Beth loved to cook and entertain, and always stimulated lively discussions at her social gatherings. She had an insatiable thirst for learning and was a gifted teacher. Beth earned her undergraduate degree in Education from Oakland University in Michigan, her master’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and taught school in Michigan and New York for 20 years. In retirement she was active in Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island, attended numerous courses and lead their Great Books discussion group for many years. She was also an active volunteer in the community and served on the board of the American Heart Association. After she was widowed she met her second husband, Richard Greene. They shared 8 years together before he passed away, and enjoyed travelling, learning and entertaining together. She is survived by her 4 children, Mike Whitney (Shelagh), Nancy Whitney (Roy Leffelbein) Thomas Whitney (Jackie Martin), Susan Whitney (Harry Smith); 7 grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at The Island Funeral Home on Friday, September 21 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to The Heritage Library Foundation . Islandfuneralhome.com.
