Bettie Winstead Hill

In Remembrance August 3, 1932 - March 1, 2017 Mrs. Bettie Winstead Hill, 84, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on March 1, 2017 at her home. She was born in Stamping Ground, KY on August 3, 1932 to Freeman and Clara Abdon. Bettie grew up in Frankfurt, KY, where she often spoke of riding her bicycle on the "steps of the capitol." After attending High School, she married Gillmore Wise; together they had their first child, Beverly Ann in May 19, 1951. After divorcing Gilmore, Bettie served in the Women's Army Corp from 1956-1958 and trained as an x-ray technician at Fort Sam Houston Texas. While in Texas she met David Lee Winstead Jr. whom she married on November 17, 1956; together they had three children and were married for 48 years. After Mr. Winstead's passing, Bettie met Harold "Howard" Hill while driving for Thrifty Car Rental. They married in 2006 and shared a home in Charlotte until Mr. Hill's passing in 2016. Bettie will be best remembered as a loving mother, an accomplished seamstress, and for her love of animals and flowers. She was a member of Gateway Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Hill is survived by her children, Beverly Cunningham Fain and husband Gary of Lake Brownwood, TX, Teresa Winstead and partner, Daisy Vance of Mountain Grove, MO, Michael Winstead and partner Christie Sparks of Troutman, NC and Kathy Winstead Graham and partner Harold Thornhill of Charlotte, NC; sibling Eugene Francis Abdon of Brownsville, TX; grandchildren, Michael Sams, Tracy Sams Smith, and David Addison McNutt; five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. A graveside service will be held for Mrs. Bettie W. Hill on Friday, March 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Charlotte Memorial Gardens, 7632 Hood Road, Charlotte NC 28215; Reverend Hugh Foy will be officiating. Flowers may be sent to Hankins and Whittington Funeral Home at 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte NC 28203.
