Betty Cochran of Chevy Chase, Maryland, a longtime editor on Psychiatric Services, a journal of the American Psychiatric Association, died on January 29, 2019 from a massive heart attack. She was 80. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, she attended St. Teresa's Academy there and later earned a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia. She worked as a writer and editor at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, for two years, and then moved to the Washington area, where she began a 30-year career at APA. At APA, Ms. Cochran earned a reputation as a skillful and thorough editor who paid attention to detail and invariably improved whatever manuscripts she reviewed. An avid gardener, Ms. Cochran was a Master Gardener and a member of the Bethesda Community Garden Club. She also was a food and wine enthusiast and a devotee of occult British mystery novels. A devoted grandmother, she cherished spending time with her granddaughter. A talented and generous woman, Ms. Cochran was loved by her family and friends for her high integrity, good humor, and kindness. She maintained a much-admired garden at her home in Chevy Chase, and served as copy editor of The Seed, the newsletter of the Montgomery County Master Gardner program, for 11 years following her retirement from APA. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Art Pine, a retired journalist, of Chevy Chase; her stepdaughter, Amy Pine; son-in-law, Richard Ross; and grandchild, Zoe Mae Ross, of Durham, North Carolina. A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you send contributions in Ms. Cochran's memory to: So Others Might Eat (SOME) at 71 O Street N.W., Washington, DC 20001.
