Betty Alicia Cumberland
May 8th, 1928 - June 19th, 2011
Betty Cumberland, 83, died June 19, 2011 at her daughter's home, surrounded by family. She was born May 8, 1920 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada to Winifred and Herbert Spink. She was the youngest of three. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1955 with her husband and two small children, While living in Massachusetts, they added two more children to the family. They then moved from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon, where two more children were born. They finally settled in Colton in 1961 and added one more child to the family. She was a longtime member of Colton Community Church and lived in Colton for over 50 years. She was an artist and started an art class at the Colton Community Church; many members of the class said that they didn't know they could paint until she helped them. "I love Tuesdays and it's all because of Betty. On Tuesdays, I get to leave my messy house with dishes that need washing and floors that need cleaning for a few hours and get togerther with my artist-friends and look at what they're painting, talk about what I'm painting, talk about whatever is going on," states Wendelika Cline. She was also instrumental in getting the Elliot Home built in Portland after Fairview Hospital in Salem closed. Survivors include her children, Charles "Dan" Bonfield, Dianna "Lynn" Fine, Corinne "Corky" Fields, Valerie Redding and Douglas Bonfield; 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her busband , Granville Cumberland;daugther, Murial Cumberland; son William "Bill" Bonfield sister Murial Leitch and brother, Maurice Spink. Services were held June 25, at Colton Community Church. Burial was at Adams Cemetery Molalla Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements. Family is encouraged to provide an obituary or information that allows for an obituary to be written by our staff
