Bill Fletcher
August 7th, 1930 - September 7th, 2010
Bill Lee Fletcher Mr. Fletcher, 80, died Tuesday, September 7, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 7, 1930 in Charlotte, NC to the late A.O. and Edna Lawing Fletcher. Bill graduated from Cramerton High School. He was point guard on the basketball team in the 1945 and 1946 seasons, when the Cramerton Eagles won back to back State Championships. In 1948 he was voted most outstanding athlete. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bill graduated from Belmont Abbey College where he won the Marty Thomas Award for outstanding athlete, lettering in three sports, basketball, football and baseball. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Bill will be remembered for his great sense of humor. He enjoyed playing golf and spending time with the family. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jimmy Nell Butler Fletcher; son, Tom Fletcher and wife Holly; daughters Patti Leigh Fletcher, Tracy Chambers and husband Greg, and Julie Kiser and husband Chuck and his mother-in-law, Evelyn Kollender. "Papa Bill" will be truly missed by his grandchildren Amanda and Kathryn Fletcher, Jessica Proctor, Danielle and Nicholas Chambers, and Chuck Kiser. Also surviving are brother, Don Fletcher of Cramerton, N C; sister, Sherry Palmatier of Belmont, N C and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his beloved grandson Phillip Proctor, and his sisters Judith Bush and Lyndell Dockery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Friday at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. A service to celebrate Bill's life will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 11, 2010 in the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204, for all the care and compassion shown to Bill and our family and ask that memorials be made to them at the address above.
