Bill Laney Mr. Laney, 79, of Charlotte, went home to be with the Lord August 6, 2011. A native of Union County, he was born December 17, 1931 to the late D. J. and Bessie Laney. Bill served 3 years in the Korean War, as a Cryptographer with Army Intelligence. After service he spent 32 years as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. In addition, he was a faithful member of Woodlawn Baptist Church for 61 years. Bill was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His favourite times were spent watching his children play sports, pitching a game of horseshoes, playing ping pong, and time spent with his family, camping at Ocean Lakes. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters, one granddaughter, Lyndsey Laney, and one daughter-in-law, Janet Deese Laney. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Bette Goble Laney; sons, Michael Laney and Susan, Jeffrey Laney, and John Laney, all of Charlotte; daughter, Elizabeth Laney, of Clover, SC; grandchildren, Shannon Pressley and Josh, Jessica Laney and Josh Laney; great-grandchildren, Stanley, Carter, and Emarie; sister Lois Baker and Bun; and many loving nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate Bill?s life will be held 11:00AM, Wednesday August 10, 2011, in the Chapel of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, with the Rev. Earl Pennell and Rev. Don Brooks officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00PM Tuesday, August 9, at Hankins and Whittington. Memorials may be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church, 4622 Nations Crossing Rd. Charlotte, North Carolina 28217, or to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh St. Charlotte, NC 28204.
