Bill Aubrey Shirley, Jr., 62, passed away on August 9, 2014, after a courageous battle with brain cancer (GBM). Bill was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 23, 1951, to the late Bill A. and Pauline B. Shirley. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sandra Burke Shirley; and two daughters, Lauren Shirley Lewis and her husband, Michael Lewis of Raleigh, NC, Caroline Shirley Turner and her husband, George Robert Turner IV of Brooklyn, NY, and three precious grandchildren, Elizabeth Marie Lewis, Charles Hill Lewis and Lula Grace Turner. Bill is also survived by his sister, Linda Shirley Brunn and her husband, Thomas Brunn of Denver, Colorado; niece, Carrie Elizabeth Brunn; and nephew, Christopher Thomas Brunn. After graduating from Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City, Bill attended the University of Colorado and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. He received his MBA from the University of Colorado in 1979. Bill began his career at AVCO Colorado Industrial Bank in the consumer and mortgage lending business, and then worked for ITT Credit Corporation as an Investment Manager for the Equipment Finance and Leasing Division until 1984 when he went to work for Barclays Bank International Capital Markets Division in Charlotte as a Senior Vice President for credit administration. In 1992, he began a very accomplished career with Wells Fargo/Wachovia Bank for over 20 years in many areas, including Managing Director-Senior Risk Manager in Corporate Investment Banking and Wealth Management. Bill's greatest pride and joy were his daughters, Lauren and Caroline. He was always involved in their lives, gave them support and love, and encouraged them in everything they did. Bill enjoyed traveling, playing golf, going out to dinner (he was a connoisseur of calamari), and watching football, especially following his beloved Colorado Buffaloes. Bill had such a zest for life. He loved music, and experimenting with his Sonos system was one of his favorite hobbies. You could always count on him to have a fun, rocking party - complete with an expertly mixed cocktail. Bill was a man known for his kindness and integrity and had a wonderful sense of humor. He treasured all of his friends and has many fond memories with his Phi Kappa Psi fraternity brothers. A service to celebrate Bill's life will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church - 3115 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at their home. Our family wishes to thank Dr. Daniel Haggstrom at Levine Cancer Institute for his care and concern. He and his staff were always there to offer guidance and support. We wish to express our appreciation and gratitude for all the loving care provided by Senior Helpers and Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region. Thank you Edward, Tiffany, Todd, and Garrett - you are my special "angels." Sincere thanks go to all of our wonderful friends for their calls, cards, visits, meals, and help in our time of need. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Bill's memory to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or Senior Helpers: 9307 Monroe Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28270. The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
