Brian Smalley February 26, 1973 – January 5, 2016 Resident of Santa Cruz Brian Smalley, a native of Plattsburgh, NY, passed away peacefully in Santa Cruz. Brian arrived in California with his mother in 1984, living for four years in Monterey before relocating to Santa Cruz County in 1988. Brian graduated from Soquel High School in 1991 and, following several years in the workforce, attended Cabrillo College. After transferring to UC Santa Cruz, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, graduating, with High Honors, in 2004. For nearly fifteen years he worked as a Manager at Capitola Book Café. Brian is survived by his mother, Topsy Neher Smalley, of Santa Cruz, and many friends and colleagues who remember him fondly. He is preceded in death by his father, Neal Smalley of Plattsburgh, NY, and his best friend Kurt Langholff of Capitola. Brian was a passionate reader of science fiction and fantasy novels, particularly the work of Stephen King and Robert Jordan. He enjoyed making an annual trip with friends to fish from the Middle Fork Stanislaus River at Kennedy Meadows. An excellent guitar player, he was a devoted fan of the Grateful Dead, often signing off conversations with his signature phrase: "Have a grateful day!" A celebration of Brian's life will take place at a time and location to be announced.
