In Loving Memory

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Britton Emanuel Ogden, affectionately known to friends and loved ones as “Spike”. Spike passed away on October 14, 2024, at the age of 57 marking the end of his distinguished career as an Assistant EMS Shift Manager and Lieutenant. He was a legendary paramedic whose dedication and passion for his work left a lasting impact on those he mentored and served alongside.  Born on October 9, 1967, in Charleston, SC, Britt was the son of James William Ogden and Eugenia Parker Ogden who nurtured his spirit of service, humor, and kindness that defined his life. Britt attended Dreher High School and graduated from Camden Military Academy. A proud Veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserves, Britt embodied the values of compassion, discipline, duty, and service carrying those principles into every aspect of his life. He found his professional calling at the Richland County Emergency Medical Service where he served for many years. His dedication to his community was unwavering. He made a memorable appearance on an episode of Rescue 911 in 1992, where his heroism and skills were showcased to the world when he helped save a young child trapped in a laundry chute. His dedication to saving lives and mentoring future generations of EMTs/Paramedics will not be forgotten. The picnic bench under the famous tree where Spike often gathered was a special place of joy and laughter and it will forever be a place of happiness, a spot where memories of his humor, kindness, “conspiracy theories” and infectious spirit will live on.  Known for his deep knowledge of EMS practices, his quick wit, and warm humor, Britt earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues. His tireless efforts and compassionate care made a lasting impact on the lives of those he served and the EMS family he cherished.  Outside of his career, Britt was an avid outdoorsman finding joy in hunting, fishing, shrimping, and becoming an avid sharks’ teeth hunter with Michelle.  He loved the sand and sea, and Folly Beach held a special place in his heart. It was there that he married the love of his life, Michelle, in a celebration of love and family by the ocean he adored. Britt was pre-deceased by his father James William “Bill” Ogden and is survived by his beloved wife Michelle, and his daughters, Cheyanne and Kendyl, who were the light of his life.  He also leaves behind his devoted mother Eugenia Ogden, his sister Allison and her husband Joe, his father and mother-in-law, Bailey and Pauline McClinton, Brother-in law Coy and his wife Margaret Elizabeth, nieces Rebecca and Grace and nephew Durham, along with countless relatives throughout SC and Georgia. His brothers and sisters in the Richland County EMS also mourn his passing, knowing the void left by his absence will be deeply felt. Britt “Spike” Ogden will be remembered for his service, humor, and unwavering love of family, community, and country.

He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, courage, and leading by example that will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.  Rest easy Lieutenant Ogden, your watch is over, we got it from here.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbia Animal Shelter or Samaritan’s Purse Hurricane Relief, in Honor of Britt Ogden.
