Bruce Kohn

September 13th, 1959 - April 7th, 2024

Our beloved Bruce Kohn passed away peacefully Sunday morning, April 7, 2024 after a long and valiant struggle against cancer. Bruce Rudy Kohn (son of the late Martha and Robert Kohn) was born in St. Louis, Missouri (Sept. 13, 1959). He attended schools in the Clayton school district and then Washington University in St. Louis, graduating with a degree in electrical engineering in 1981. He moved to Tucson, Arizona where he spent the rest of his life. He worked as an environmental engineer in the automotive industry developing auto emission testing systems for entire countries, states and agencies around the world. Bruce was the very definition of a "Renaissance Man." A talented musician, he mastered piano, guitar, flute, and trumpet and loved to accompany group singing at parties and events. He was also drawn to auto engineering and in high school, purchased several broken-down cars and completely rebuilt them. A brilliant and talented engineer, his creative and innovative technical solutions were universally admired by colleagues and sought after by clients. Bruce pursued a bewildering number of passions with an awe-inspiring degree of dedication and focus. While still in high school, he earned his private pilot's license and flew small aircraft locally and across the country for pleasure and work trips. He especially enjoyed flying friends to the Grand Canyon for camping and backpacking trips. When considering applying to medical school, Bruce took on advanced medical studies and volunteered in local hospitals. He enjoyed motorcycling, riding horses, hiking, running and was meticulous about healthy eating and living. Bruce found love and true happiness marrying Larysa and becoming a father later in life. He delighted in carefully planning all details of family trips around the world with his wife, young son and stepson. He found true fulfillment as a father and family man. Even the diagnosis of cancer couldn't slow him. He was driven to pursue all possible medical therapies until the end and worked solving professional challenges up to nearly his last day. He died far too soon, but peacefully in his home surrounded by family. He is survived by Larysa (wife), Austin (son), Vlad (stepson), Joel & Daniel (brothers) and many life-long close friends. There will be a celebration of his life in Tucson, May 5 for close friends and family. Contributions in his name should be directed to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ or the Tucson Jewish Community Center

My dear friend Bruce: I feel real pain, and I can’t comprehend yet that you have passed on. You have been such a constant force in the last 20 years of my life that it’s difficult to understand. What a friend have you been to me! So full of admiration for me that I always felt it is undeserved. So interested in my well-being, my professional development and in the people around me. And you always remembered all details of our earlier conversations that I felt embarrassed for not remembering them equally. Instead, you are the one to admire, you have so many talents it’s difficult to list them all. You were blessed with playing several instruments well, not needing notes, and with such a profound knowledge of the theory of music. There was hardly a topic you weren’t a real expert in: for example, flying your Mooney until you no longer could. When we met, we often talked about both, philosophical and psychological topics where I learned so much from you. I remember during our last encounter you were telling me a few detailed questions to ask of my daughter Lorena (who’s doing her residence in psychiatry) that I had to write them down. I have always told people that my friend Bruce is the most intelligent person I’ve ever met. It was so obvious. However, to tell you a secret, in part I admired your intelligence so much, hoping that some of it one day may rub off. Most important though has been your warmth and your caring personality that came across every time we met or talked on the phone. My visits over the past few months with you have been very intense emotionally – you have cried a lot. You had become so fragile physically, though your mind was sharp as always. Now it’s me who’s crying for you. The worry you expressed about Laryssa’s, Austin’s, and also Vlad’s future without you was so painful to listen to. I miss you, Bruce. We both know that I owe you a tremendous amount of gratitude, as, what business success I may have had in life, a large part of it I owe it to you. Goodbye my dear friend – I know that our friendship will continue forever. Lothar

This is so true - "Bruce found love and true happiness marrying Larysa and becoming a father later in life." Bruce talked about his earlier life fondly, but it was clear that it was his later life that he enjoyed most, and considered himself so lucky, after waiting so long, to be blessed with such a wonderful wife and child. My heart breaks for them both. I know that Austin will eventually be okay, in part, because he has been lucky enough to have had 12 years of love and guidance from such a dedicated father. Austin will see that Bruce lives on through him every time he looks in the mirror... I will so miss Bruce's sense of humor, enthusiasm for life, and interesting take on the world... He was taken way way to soon.

Bonetta (Evans) Hutson

🕯️ This amazing man was my friend. A role model to my sons growing up, teaching them how to be men of integrity. We spent quite a few years playing music and singing together...even collaborating on a selection of songs together. Our repertoire ranged from Peter, Paul and Mary, Elton John, the Indigo Girls and Kenny Loggins. But also we lived to sing songs from Les Miserable' and Phantom. We were big fans of Andrew Lloyd Weber. We met while working at Hamilton Test Systems in the mid 80's, and we became the bestest of friends. We had a fondness for riding elevators, jazz music and just being silly together. My sons. Christian Evans and Stephan ( Chrissy Bruening ) grew up in their formulative years seeing what a healthy friendship looked liked. Over the years we stayed in touch, sometimes reminiscent of past experiences we shared. Bruce saw me through some of the most difficult times in my life and stood by me as my friend, loyal, never judgemental. Bruce was an important part in my children's lives and I regret he never got to meet my husband Josh or to see my sons for the men they grew into. I remember how excited he was when he shared with me he had fallen in love, married and then to become a father! I was glad he had found the happiness he deserved. I shall miss my friend but he will live forever in my heart...in my thoughts.
