Calvin "Cal" Owen Stout
August 19th, 1924 - July 19th, 2016
Cal was born in Wilmington, California, on August 19, 1924. He was the seventh of eight children born to David and Lucy (Eames) Stout. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Oregon where he attended school. He was a junior at Canby High School when he decided to drop out and enlist in the Navy during World War II—1942. He was a machinist’s mate on the U.S.S. Card. While on ship, he saw the damage inflicted on a sister ship and all the sailors who had died in the ocean. He then committed his life to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His church community was always important to him. He attended West Hills Covenant Church in Portland until his death. In 1944, he returned home and married his high school girlfriend, Harriet Stout, January 11, 1944, in Portland, Oregon. They stayed in the Navy until August 1947 when they returned to the Portland/Vancouver area. In May 1948, they found a house in the McLoughlin Heights of Vancouver, Washington. In 1952, Cal began working as a truck driver for Bower Moving and Storage, where he remained for thirty years, eventually moving into sales. Sales was Cal’s passion and he was always involved in it one way or another, whether it was moving, vacuum cleaners, Watkins products, calendars, or food supplements. Cal and Harriet divorced in 1971; he married Donna McCroskey in 1972. After Cal’s retirement, he lived in Portland, Oregon, his latest residence being in King City. Even after he “retired,” he continued to work part-time for the Portland Auto Auction, a job he held for over 15 years until he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in October 2015 at the age of 91. Cal is survived by his wife Donna; his son, Steve (Nancy) Stout; daughters, Kathy Lee and Lanette (Jerry) Guest.
