Camilla Lloyd Smith, 87, died Monday, July 23, 2012 at her residence at the Goodwin House retirement community, in Falls Church, VA. She was married to the late David A. Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Lucinda Ross Smith and her husband Roger Hoffmann of Loveland, CO., her son, David Lloyd Smith and his wife Leslie Ann Gerardo of Arlington, VA, and two grandchildren, Harrison James Smith and Lindsay Catherine Smith of Arlington, VA. Mrs, Smith was born November 3, 1924 in Doylestown, PA. Her father, Col. James Paul Lloyd , was a career Army officer, and Mrs. Smith grew up as an “Army brat” on bases in Hawaii, Panama, and Portland, ME, among other places. Mrs. Smith’s family on both her mother’s and father’s side had deep roots in the legal and medical professions in the greater Philadelphia and Doylestown, PA area, stretching back to the 18th century. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, VA and received a certificate degree in occupational therapy from the Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy in 1946. Her first job at Bellevue Hospital in New York City was working with returning WWII veterans, and she continued this work later through the Visiting Nurse Association of Bethlehem, PA. Mrs. Smith met her husband and raised her family in Bethlehem, PA. She was involved in her community in a variety of ways. She started the “Friends of the Saucon Valley Schools,” a parents advocacy group that was instrumental in improving the curriculum of the Saucon Valley School District. For over 25 years, she and her husband David delivered Meals on Wheels, and for many years they both read the news on the Radprin radio network for the blind. Mrs. Smith volunteered with the Sun Inn of Bethlehem, giving guided tours and contributing to the research on the life of Chief Corn Planter of the Seneca people. For over 40 years, Mrs. Smith was actively involved in her church, the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where she variously taught Sunday School, coordinated the Christmas Fair, served on the Alter Guild, and organized the “Flower Group”. In 2006 Mrs. Smith moved to Falls Church, Virginia and lived at the Goodwin House retirement community. She is remembered lovingly by family and friends for her graciousness, dignity, and humor. A memorial service will be held at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, PA on August 10 at 11:00. An earlier memorial service is being planned at the Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroad, 3440 South Jefferson Street, Falls Church VA. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Meals on Wheels of Northampton County, 4240 Fritch Drive
Bethlehem, PA 18020, 888-713-7787.
