Captain Louis L. Herzog
August 18th, 1932 - December 21st, 2021
Navy Captain Louis L Herzog born in Galveston Texas on August 18th, 1932 passed away in Charlotte, NC on December 21st, 2021. Lou graduated from Jesuit High School in New Orleans, LA and in 1950 attended Loyola University of the South while enlisted in the Naval Air Reserve program. He was married to Patricia Ruth Coycault in 1956. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1965. Lou reported to Navy active duty in 1953 entering Naval Aviation Cadet Training where he was commissioned an Ensign and designated a Naval Aviator in 1955. Lou served in many parts of the world including cruises to the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and around South America. He served as a fighter Pilot; Operations, Administration and Weapons Officer, Safety Officer, Instructor Pilot, Liaison Officer, and as a press briefer, many of these commissions occurred during the Vietnam War. After the War Lou attended the Armed Forces Air Intelligence Training course and served as the Targeting Officer for Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet. After a tour as Carrier Division TWO Intelligence Officer, where he was involved in large scale National and NATO Exercises in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, Captain Herzog reported for duty with the Naval Intelligence Command, where he headed the Fleet Tactical Intelligence Center Command Headquarters. He then served as CO of Fleet Intelligence Center Pacific in Hawaii. He returned to Washington DC assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency where he served until his Naval retirement in 1979 after 30 years of serving his country. Although New Orleans LA was Lous hometown, his service took him and his family all over the Country, including California, Colorado, Hawaii, and Virginia. Following his Naval Career Lou worked in the private sector with several consulting companies as a Project Manager leading Federal government projects leveraging his active-duty experience. After their youngest daughter, Susan, was killed on New Years Eve, 1982, by a teenage drunk driver, they joined MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). Lous and his wife Pattys efforts over 10 years led directly to tougher drunk driving laws in the State of Virginia as well as at the Federal level. Lous final 2 years at MADD were as the East Coast Coordinator for National MADD. In 1998 Lou and his wife of 65 years Patty relocated from Fairfax, Virginia to Sun City in Bluffton, SC. While in SC, Lou enjoyed many hobbies including playing golf with members of the "Old Geezer Golf Group" and as an active member of the Republican club. In 2007 their beloved daughter, Debbie, passed away from cancer. In 2018 Lou and Patty moved to Charlotte to be closer to family where he could sit on the floor and play with his 3 Great-Grandchildren. Known as Cappie Lou" to his Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren Lou was full of life and energy, not one to sit around! Lou enjoyed "puttering" in his garage or study, gardening (he could make a stick grow) or playing golf. Lou was eager to help anyone. When playing golf, he was more interested in helping those he played with find their ball or selecting their club than he was about his own game. This active lifestyle originated from his childhood days roaming the Galveston TX beaches and neighborhoods with his friends and cousins, wrestling in High school, running several marathons, biking to work in Pearl Harbor so his daughters would have a car. Lou was a caring and patient father and husband always ready to teach his girls how to change a tire, mow the grass or tend the garden. Lou also enjoyed vacations with his Family and grandchildren and friends. Trips to the beach, Golf Trips, trips to a "Dude Ranch" and Hawaii with his grandchildren Susan and Kristin, a personal bucket list trip to Australia with Patty, and a trip to Atlantis with friends Fran and John. They also took many trips to see family and friends in California, Texas, Louisiana. Lou is preceded in death by his parents Catherine (Mimi) and Sydney Herzog, his sister Pat and her husband Charlie Abadie and his beloved daughters Susan Marie Herzog and Deborah Lynn Herzog and many dear friends.
