Carl "Charlie" Bartlett
June 10th, 1932 - March 8th, 2018
The man, the myth, the legend Carl "Charlie" Bartlett began his life story on June 10, 1932 in Big Springs, Texas. The last chapter of an unbelievable journey was completed with his passing on March 8, 2018. Carl passed peacefully in his home surrounded by family. Carl proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1957. He was stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming as well as Alaska. Carl returned to the Yuba-Sutter area after being honorably discharged from the Air Force. Although his favorite job in life was simply raising hell, Carl embarked on a journey to start Valley Pump and Motor Works after he planted his roots in Yuba City. Carl cultivated his business with a passion, fury, and tenacity that was untouchable. An advocate for hard work and getting your hands dirty, his methods still shine through as Valley Pump celebrates 53 years of business. Carl continued to oversee daily operations until his passing, there was no slowing his dedication for business. Capturing a personality and spirit as big as Carl's in a few short paragraphs is nearly impossible. However, what he enjoyed most was his antique cars, traveling, fast motorcycles, and making wildly inappropriate and sarcastic comments. Carl was always ready for a good laugh; good company, and certainly left an impression on all he met. If Carl had a take away for us all it would be in the words of his favorite singer Johnny Cash "You have to be who you are, whatever you are, you gotta be it!" Carl was always himself which was the man we knew loved, and appreciated. Carl was preceded in death by his father and mother, Norman and Vera Bartlett; brother Al Bartlett; step-son Tom Thompson. Survived by his wife Jan Bartlett; sister, Gerry Davids of Yuba City; Elaine Blessman of Texas; daughter, Sharron Asher (Greg) of Oregon House; daughter Robin Dennis (Larry) of Browns Valley; step-son Jerry Thompson (Kara) of Nampa, Idaho; son Carl "Rick" Bartlett (Jessica Bagley) of Gridley; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren Visitation will be Monday, March 19, 2018 from 4pm-7pm. Service will be held at 11:00 am, March 20, 2018 at Ullrey's Memorial Chapel, 817 Almond St., Yuba City. Graveside services will follow at Sutter Cemetery.
