Carol J. Smith

Carol J Smith was born on Friday, June 13th, 1941 to C Jerry and Thelma (Janke) Miller in Colorado Springs. She grew up in ID and MT and graduated High School in Valier MT in1958with honors and a full scholarship to the College of Great Falls where she attended for one year.. In August of 1957 she met her soul mate, best friend, and wonderful husband, Jerry Smith, who was on a combine crew. She and Jerry were married in Havre, Montana on June 17, 1959. From there they moved to Perry, OK where Sharlyn and Laurie were born. They moved to Fort Morgan where Carol did all of the darkroom work for The Fort Morgan Times. They moved to Greeley where Carol had several jobs. She worked for the 8th Edition Bookstore, Shef Enterprises, and 20 years as a receptionist for Dwaine Kurtz. The Smith’s traveled many places, covering 40 states, seeing many state and national parks. They drove to Alaska where their daughter Sharlyn lives. They flew over the Arctic Circle visiting Koztebue, Nome and Homer. Recently, they attended a "Cousins” reunion in Boise. She was a faithful member of the First Christian Church wherever they lived. She was active in Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF). She was a 47 year member of Beta Sigma Phi and held all offices more than once. Carol was 3 time Chairman of the Board at the First Christian Church. She also served 3 terms as an Elder and most other offices. The couple hosted 7 Japanese exchange students and stayed in touch for more than 30 years with 4 of them. She loved her family, Church-family, Sorority-family, and her many friends. Carol is survived by her husband, Jerry, of 55 years, daughters Sharlyn (Erben) and Laurel Speck (Joel), grandson, Matthew Hillesland, granddaughter, Tracey Hillesland, step granddaughter, Jodi Bomar, step great grandchildren, Jayson, Justyn, and Joanna Bomar, brother Mike Miller (Linda) Mexico, Dick Miller (Karen) Valier MT, sister Jill Morris (Dave), Moore MT, brother in law Chuck Smith (Lorene), Perry OK, exchange students Yoshikazu, Emi, Satako, and Toshiko all of Japan and many nieces, nephews, and Cousins. Carol is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Bill Miller, and granddaughter Beckie Hillesland. In lieu of flowers Carol would like contributions made to the First Christian Church, Christian Women’s Fellowship, the Humane Society, or Hospice. For Carol’s celebration of life she wished for attendees to dress casually wearing something from their favorite sports team or the color red. No suits, ties, or high heels please.
