Nellermoe, Carroll Wandell Wannie was born November 2, 1926 in Fargo, North Dakota. He was the son of Melford and Edith Nellermoe. After graduating from Fargo High School, he served in the US Navy as an Electronic Technician’s Mate, Third Class from 1944 to 1946. He attended North Dakota Agricultural College for a year and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Washington State College in 1949. After college, he entered medical school at the University of Washington in Seattle where he met his future wife, Nora Conway. Nora and Wannie were married in 1952. After earning his MD in 1953, Wannie re-enlisted in the US Navy where he completed his internship and flight surgeon school. He then served as a flight surgeon until 1957. Wannie completed a two-year residency in anesthesia at Virginia Mason. He practiced anesthesiology for a year in Fargo before settling in Spokane in 1960 where he practiced for the next 28 years. After retiring in 1988, he and Nora lived in Oak Harbor, WA, Scottsdale, AZ, Honolulu, HI and Gig Harbor, WA. Wannie enjoyed reading, boating, snow skiing, traveling and gardening. He loved challenging people with his extensive vocabulary and started his daughters early in the practice of having a dictionary at the dinner table. After months of declining health, Wannie passed away on June 5, 2014. He is survived by Nora and his four daughters: Leslie Nellermoe, Kathleen Nellermoe (Kevin Silvers), Karen Chase (Tim), and Patricia Byers (Tom). Wannie and Nora have five grandchildren: Devin, Margaret and Reilly McKissic and Kathryn and Michael Chase. Wannie is also survived by his sister, Jean Schroeder (Darrol), many nieces, nephews and dear friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Manor Care and The Lodge at Mallard’s Landing in Gig Harbor for their compassionate care. Memorial service will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington on July 7, 2014 at 1:30 pm. Following the service, there will be a reception at the Nellermoe home.
