Born January 24, 1933, in Currie, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Sidney Roderick Moore and Sallie Ann Carroll Moore. She was the oldest of three children, surviving her brothers Rodney and Graham. Valedictorian of her senior class in high school, she continued her studies at Campbell College (now Campbell University) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She graduated with a degree in education in 1955 and moved to Raeford, North Carolina, where she began her career teaching high school social studies and history. In Raeford, she met and lately married Walter N. Coley in June of 1961. Together, they had four children. In 1975, she returned to college to renew her teaching certificate. She then taught middle school math for the remainder of her career, retiring after twenty-five years. She was known to have taught the children of some of her earliest students. Carroll was very active at Raeford Presbyterian Church, teaching and serving with the Women of the Church and on the Board of Deacons and Session. She was honored by the Presbyterian Women as woman of the year and elected an elder emerita in 2020. Carroll enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, and needlework. She particularly enjoyed working in her garden. Carroll was most proud of her children and grandchildren. She was known as a very loving but strict mother and grandmother. She bragged about her nickname, “Mean Old Woman.” Carroll is survived by her husband of 60 years, Walter; her children Parker Coley Sumner; Edward Roderick “Eric” Coley and his wife Rachel; Thomas Moore “Tom” Coley and his wife Katie; and Mary Parrish Coley; and grandchildren Garrett Lynn Sumner, Hannah Parker Sumner, Rowan Carroll Coley, Julie Eloise Coley and Maeve Victoria Coley.
