The passing of Charles Earl Barnett, Jr. (1927-2019) Charles (Charlie) Earl Barnett, Jr. passed away early Sunday morning, March 3, 2019, in Tualatin, Oregon, four months before his 92nd birthday. Born on June third, 1927, in Manhattan Beach California, he was the eldest son of Helen Roberta (Steeley), of El Paso, Texas, and Charles Earl Barnett, Sr., of Los Angeles, California. His elder sister, Virginia Joyce Ostrander, passed away on November 9, 2018. These were two major losses within the span of a few months. He is survived by his wife, Carol, and by his younger brother, William Patrick. He is also survived by the children of his first marriage, Jean, Elizabeth, Carolyn, Allison, by his second wife, Brook, and their daughter, Faith, and by his many grand and great grandchildren. Charlie graduated from Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, California, then attended the University of Southern California for two years and transferred to UC Berkeley where he graduated with a degree in economics. He used his background in economics and business to attain many positions of responsibility in the public and private sectors. He was an Assistant Superintendent of Business Services in several Northern and Southern California secondary school districts. Never one to rest, while he was working and living in San Gabriel, California, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Pepperdine University. After retirement he continued to live life to the full by traveling to many lands and living in many places until he finally settled down for good in Oregon where he met his future wife, Carol, in an art class. Charlie was a man of many talents: an inspirational leader in the public and private sectors, an independent thinker and writer, a painter, an artist, a poet, a cartoonist, an athlete and a humorist. His brother, Pat, considered Charlie to be his mentor and greatest inspiration. Finally, he was one of the vanishing vets who served in WWII. Final interment was at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. He is missed.
