Charles Dalburg Hoyt, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at his home in McLean, VA. Charles was born on May 5, 1925 in East Orange, New Jersey; he was the son of Constance (Dalburg) Hoyt. At the age of ten he moved to Montoursville, PA. In Montoursville, Charles, along with his mother and his brother, lived with his uncle, Frank Dalburg, who had a fascinating international mining career. Frank provided the inspiration for both his nephews to become mining engineers. Charles served in the Navy from1943-46. In 1946 Charles attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he was the running fullback for the Engineers football team. He graduated in February 1949 from Penn State with a B.S. in Mining Engineering (where he was in the Chi Phi fraternity and tried his hand at boxing); he earned a Fulbright Scholarship, Norwegian Technical Institute, 1950; and an M.S. from the Colorado School of Mines, 1951. In 1951 he began a 12 year national and international career in the private sector. During this time he spent two years teaching mining engineering in Bandung, Indonesia where he met his wife, Maria-Isabel Arce. He and Maria-Isabel, were united in marriage on January 28, 1961 in Scarsdale, New York. They started their married life in Riverton, Wyoming and together they shared 56 years of marriage. In 1963 Charles joined the Bureau of Mines. He spent 31 years in Federal service. He had an interesting and diverse career which took him and his family to Washington, D.C., Tampa, Florida, and Puerto Rico. In 1988 he was named International Minerals Division Chief. His last assignment at the Bureau of Mines was heading the group in charge of revising and updating the Dictionary of Mining, Mineral, and Related Terms. After his retirement he continued working on the project as a volunteer until its completion. He retired in July 1991 and continued as an international mining consultant. Charles embodied a spirit of kindness and generosity. He never met a stranger. He had a lifelong love of learning and was a voracious reader. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all those that loved him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Carlos R. Hoyt (Margaret Allen) of Worthington, Ohio; his son, Roberto A. Hoyt (Amber Noble) of Raleigh, North Carolina; his daughter Kristina (David) Gebhardt of Mason, Ohio; grandchildren, Benjamin, Kristina, Roberto, Alexander, Anna, Andrew, Isabel, and Macy.
