Charles F. Philips
January 19th, 1936 - March 4th, 2017
Philips Jr., Charles F., 81, of St. Petersburg passed away on March 4, 2017. This amazing man was born on January 19, 1936 in Harrisburg, PA to the late Sara Umsted Phillips & Charles F. Philips. His family moved to St. Petersburg in 1947 from Dowingtown, PA. Charles graduated from St. Pete High in 1953. In 1959, he graduated from St. Pete Jr College, where he was captain of the Varsity Basketball Team. Charles served proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War. In 1976, he was the founder of AABCO Mortgage Company and was also CEO and Chairman. The company grew to have over 41 offices in 8 states with over 150 employees. In 1995, Charles sold the business to Crown Bank. He formally retired from AABCO in 2000. Charles enjoyed golf, boating and flying. He was also an avid sports fan and held season tickets to the Florida Gators, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Tampa Bay Rays. Charles attended St. Raphael Catholic Church with his family. He was a past member of the Rotary Club, past president of St. Pete College Booster Association, past president of Central Plaza Merchants Association, past president of West Coast Florida Mortgage Brokers Association and held a Florida Real Estate License for over 30 years. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Barbara J. Philips; daughters, Christy Clark, Laurie Gorman, Brytt Mathas (Brad Mathas);Stepson, Darren Davidson; Grandchildren, John Gorman III, Hayley Gorman, Kristin Justice; brother-in-law Richard Amann and David Amann; many extended family members and friends. A visitation will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10am until 11am, Anderson McQueen, 2201 Dr. MLK Street, St. Petersburg, FL 33704. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 11am. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please contact the family for donation options.
