Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory
Charles William Platt
July 22nd, 1928 - July 18th, 2017
Charles W. (Pete) Platt, 88, of Punta Gorda, Florida and formerly of Forked River, New Jersey, peacefully passed away at his home on July 18, 2017 surrounded by his family. Pete is survived by his loving wife Jane of 62 years. They have known each other since their first day of school in first grade. They were married in Barrington, New Jersey on May 15, 1955. Pete was born in Barrington, New Jersey on July 22, 1928 and graduated from Haddon Heights High School in Haddon Heights, New Jersey. He spent the majority of his adult life in Ewing Township, New Jersey during his working years and then moved to Forked River, New Jersey upon retirement. Recently, Pete and Jane relocated to Punta Gorda, Florida to be close to their daughter. Pete truly enjoyed spending time with his family and was so proud to serve as the best man at his grandson Charles' wedding a few years ago. He was an avid (and continually disappointed) fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. He loved sailing and motor boating and participated in the Forked River boat parade for several years with Jane and other family members as crew. He also enjoyed reading and playing the organ. He was an accomplished woodcrafter, building additions to his vacation home in Stone Harbor, NJ, crafting furniture for his home, and creating decorative wood pieces such as birdhouses, wall sconces, and Christmas decorations that he sold at craft shows. Many of Pete's creations are held by family and friends and will be cherished reminders of him. Pete held a private pilot license and enjoyed flying small planes. He worked for American Cyanamid in Princeton, New Jersey in an administrative management role for more than 25 years. Pete is lovingly remembered by his wife Jane of Punta Gorda, Florida, daughter Kathleen Platt and her spouse Leslie Nielsen of Punta Gorda Florida, his grandchildren Brooke (Mike) Madruga of Salisbury MD, and Charles W. (Rebecca) Platt III of Ocean View NJ; his great grandchildren Nathan, Kenzie, and Sadie Madruga; and Charles W. IV and Harper Platt; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Pete is preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Alberta Platt, his brother John B. Platt Jr., his sister, Mary Basford, and his son Charles W. Platt Jr. All who knew Pete referred to him as a true gentleman. The world is a sadder place without him, but he will live on in our hearts and minds always. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 367 U.S. 9, Waretown, NJ 08758 or to the Church of the Good Shepherd, 401 W. Henry Street, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. A memorial service to celebrate Pete's life will be held on Monday, July 31, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 401 W. Henry Street, Punta Gorda, FL 33950.
