Charles Edward Rothe

Charles Edward Rothe 3/3/50-8/15/21 Charles "Chuck" Rothe, aka “Maddog”, was born in Denver, CO on March 3, 1950. He moved to Seattle as a young child with his mother, father and sister. While attempts to rebrand himself as "Tex" didn't catch on, the damp and moody ambiance of the Pacific Northwest proved suitable and Chuck lived the rest of his life in the Seattle area. Chuck attended Sammamish High School and graduated from the University of Washington in 1972 with a B.A. in drama/set design while living the bachelor life with his best friends on E. Miller St. It was during this time he met his future wife, Annette (whom he affectionately called Annie Bear) through mutual friends. They married in 1977 in her parents' yard in proper Hippie fashion. Their daughter, Shannon, was born in 1981. During his life, Chuck worked in various industries including retail, restaurants, delivery services and bookkeeping. But his true passion lay in his interests. Chuck was an avid reader and book collector. He loved nothing more than perusing the aisles of a used bookstore, looking for the perfect 20th century Sci-Fi first edition to add to his collection. Chuck also had a great appreciation for theater, classical music and films - usually the more obscure the better. His attempts to school his daughter in the "classiques" often had mixed results, but did prove to be very useful for trivia. However, over the years, Chuck and Shannon enjoyed attending many plays together with their goal being to see every Shakespeare play performed. Chuck will be remembered for his bad dad jokes, collecting coins found on the ground, ubiquitous jeans and flannel shirts, culinary talents, being one of the "pack" with the pets, and his love of baseball and softball. He and Annette enjoyed playing on various softball teams together and he was particularly thrilled that his granddaughter enjoys the game as much as he did. He also had the amazing ability to find the good in people or events and was always willing to help others out. Chuck fought a brave battle against esophageal cancer but ultimately it proved to be too formidable of a foe. Chuck left this world in much the same way he lived: quietly and mildly, at home with the Mariners game on. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dorothy Rothe; grandniece, Kelly Meader; brother-in-law, John R. Marts; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Marion E. Marts and Dorys Marts; and beloved pets: Worker, Cassie, Pepper, Lukie, Heidi, Boo, Chiquita and Wendy. Chuck is survived by his wife Annette Rothe, daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Lance Naugle, granddaughter Kaylee Naugle, sister Charlene Shaw, sister-in-law, Susan Stark, brother-in-law, Brian Marts (Valorie Knieper), nieces Michelle (John) Meader, Lisa (Ken) Lewis; nephews Kevin Marts and John Shaw; grandnephews Matt, Chris, Nick; grandnieces Hannah and Grace, and best friends Lee (Patti) Semsen and Doug (Alice) Sharp plus beloved pups: Olivia, Wesley and Maura. A Celebration of Life will be held with close friends and family. In honor of Chuck's memory, the family requests that donations be made to Seattle Shakespeare Company.
