Claire C. Chatterton

Mrs. Claire C. Chatterton, age 82, of Gloversville, passed away Friday, July 19, 2013 with her family at her side at Mountain Valley Hospice. Her death followed a brief illness. She was born June 2, 1931 in Gloversville, the daughter of the late Arthur and Lottie Mae Longpre Couture. A 1949 graduate of Gloversville High School, she later worked at General Electric in Schenectady from 1950 to 1953 and then as a legal secretary for several attorneys in the Fulton County area. She was later employed as a secretary by the Gloversville Enlarged School District from 1964 until her retirement in 1992. Claire was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, an honorary member of the Mayfield Yacht Club, a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Association of Letter Carriers of Gloversville and was a former Gloversville PTA member. She enjoyed raising her family and spending time with them in her home. She was married October 6, 1951 to William Chatterton, Jr. who died October 21, 1985. Claire is survived by: three children: Carol A. Hoose and her spouse Richard of Gloversville, Marianne Chatterton and her spouse Sallie Pettingill of Merrimac, Massachusetts and William A. Chatterton and his spouse Colleen of Wake Forest, NC; four grandchildren: Julianne Brown, Jeanette Brown, Lindsey Chatterton and Kayla Chatterton; a great-grandchild, Avery Noa Venneman; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, Claire was predeceased by: a daughter, Lynn M. Chatterton in 1996 and a brother, Charles Couture. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 21st at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a Prayer Service will be held 9:15 a.m. Monday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main Street, with the Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak officiating. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 120 Wall St; New York, NY 10005.
