Coit A. Brigman
August 28th, 1923 - August 15th, 2014
Coit, 90, finished the race on Friday, August 15, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife, Muriel, and son, Kevin, of Cornelius as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. Coit was predeceased by son, Ashley; four sisters; two brothers; and three half-brothers. Son of the late John and Ethel Rowell Brigman, Coit was born in a log house near Pageland, SC. Following his father's passing when Coit was four, his family sold their farm and moved to Rock Hill, then to Charlotte three years later in 1932. Coit graduated from Central High, class of '41. Coming of age during World War II, he first worked for an aircraft manufacturer in Baltimore. Then called to duty, he served his country for three years. After stints in Bainbridge (MD), Chicago, and Santa Rosa (CA), Coit was stationed at Barber's Point Naval Air Station in his beloved Hawaii as an aviation electrician. Upon returning home, Coit was employed at Union Carbide, retiring after 33 years. Subsequently, he worked nine years at White Piedmont Co. Both at work and elsewhere, he was a godsend during emergencies, as he could fix almost anything. Over the years, Coit was faithful to First Church of the Nazarene, Westover Baptist, and Pritchard Memorial Baptist, where he was Deacon Emeritus. Home and abroad, he built churches and provided disaster relief through NC Baptist Men. Coit enjoyed sports as a player and a spectator. A slugger in his day, he slammed nine home runs in eight games in a corporate league. Moreover, Coit enjoyed traveling - from quick getaways to Charleston, SC to tours through Scandinavia and the Holy Land. The love of Coit's life was Muriel. During a Carolina basketball telecast in 1957, he proposed to Muriel, the girl next door. Then hand in hand, they shared 57 years of affection and devotion. A celebration of Coit's life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC. Visitation will begin at 2 PM followed by the service at 3 PM. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn West. Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service 1111 East Blvd. Charlotte, NC, 28203. Please share condolences online at www.hankinsandwhittington.com.
