On Monday January 18, 2010 Constance Elaine Hale, age 83, of Hyattsville, Maryland passed away at Washington Adventist Hospital. Mrs. Hale was born Constance Elaine Stallworth in Americus, Georgia on January 23, 1926. She spent much of her latter childhood and adolescence in Tuskegee, Alabama, where she knew George Washington Carver and took music lessons from Booker T. Washington's daughter. She moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1948 and while in Missouri, earned a B.S. in Education from Lincoln University, Jefferson City in 1956. Mrs. Hale's most notable career position was as a Youth Leader at the St. Louis Juvenile Detention Center from 1960 to 1968, where she garnered a reputation as a mother figure to the troubled youth in her charge that lasted long after she had left. She ended her working life as a case manager at the District of Columbia's Nellums Agency Group Home for abused children, where she earned a Meritorious Service Award at her retirement. Loving mother of her son, Barry Hale and daughter, Margo Sanabria, she is also survived by her granddaughter, Jamila Sanabria. A memorial mass was celebrated on Saturday January 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church 7501 Adelphi Road, Hyattsville, MD.
