Coy was born on June 26, 1930 in Booneville, North Carolina, son of the late Alford and Lillie Brown. He spent his career as a professional golfer at several different clubs. He was a golf pro on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for many years then moved to Atlantic Beach, N. C. where he was the head pro at Bogue Banks Country Club and later at Brandywine Country Club. Later, he moved to Charlotte and concentrated on teaching golf at Crown Golf Center. He was a lifetime member of the PGA and is remembered by many as a very gifted teacher. Coy proudly served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict where he worked as a military policeman. He was charged with guarding many dignitaries throughout his military career both abroad and domestically. He attained the rank of sergeant. He was honored to be recognized recently, along with many other veterans, at a ceremony at The Carriage Club on Veteran?s Day. Coy is survived by his loving wife, Helen, of 61 years who provided nurturing care throughout his illness. He is also survived by his daughter, Lisa Alexander and her husband, Heath of Charlotte; grandson, Heath Alexander and his wife, Susan; granddaughter, Kelsey Alexander; two sisters-in-law, Betty Deason and Anne Hinkle; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, and one sister. While living on the Outer Banks, Coy was a member of Kitty Hawk Baptist Church and later enjoyed church services at The Carriage Club and looked forward to attending on Sunday mornings. Coy loved spending time with his family, had a special fondness for traveling and never met a stranger. He was a very kind, gentle, man who always had a big smile and looked for any opening in the conversation to discuss golf. He had many very special memories and friends throughout the golf community. A service to celebrate Coy?s life will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium of The Carriage Club with the Reverend Roger A. Lakatos officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Honorary pallbearers will be Jamison Hinkle, Richard Deason, Carl Metheny, Robert Metheny, Fred Porter, and Tripp Porter.
