Cozzetta Ophelia Patterson Thomas
May 2nd, 1934 - February 21st, 2024
“In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.” - Proverbs 3:6
Cozzetta Ophelia Patterson Thomas was called home to be with the Lord on February 21, 2024.
She was born on May 2, 1934, in Badin, North Carolina to the late S. Frank and Anna Patterson. Cozzetta was the 12th child of the union. As a young child, she attended First Baptist Church. There, she accepted Christ and was baptized.
She graduated from West Badin High School and later that year she joined the United States Air Force. She wanted to be a pilot, but they made her a medic. That is where she met and married her husband Curtis L. Thomas and then became a military spouse. To this union they had four children, Shirley, Gwendolyn, Curtis Jr., and Patrick. She was an active military spouse for thirty years, living in four states and two foreign countries, before making Colorado Springs their home.
Our mom was a professional tailor. There were times people would ask her to make a garment for them. She made most of her daughters’ clothing and would work late into the night. She worked at the Cadet Tailor Shop for almost thirty years and in her final years there was the manager. Sewing was her love. If you had any questions about sewing, she could answer them.
Upon returning to Colorado Springs, in 1976, she joined Friendship Baptist Church under Pastor El Ray Johnson. She was a member of Sunday school, the intermediate and senior missions and loved to sing. She was a member of the Angelic Mass and the Mission Choirs. She served in various positions, like chairperson over women’s day, president of mission, and the choir. She loved great preaching.
Cozzetta was an avid sport person. She loved watching her children and her grandchildren play sports. She had a broad knowledge of all sports. She loved attending the Air Force Sporting events. She could tell you where each player had played whether it was college or professional. She had her own subscription to Sports Illustrated.
Cozzetta was a Past Matron of Magnolia Chapter 14 OES, Prince Hall Affiliated. Member of the Golden Circle Pikes Assembly No. 52. She loved to travel, especially road trips. Her sisters would say that Cokie, as they called her, loves her four babies and all her grandkids.
She was preceded in death by her husband Curtis Sr.; granddaughter Danielle N. Enninful; her parents, Anna and S. Frank Patterson; and eleven siblings.
She is survived by her four children, Shirley, Gwendolyn, Curtis (Dawn) and Patrick; her four grandchildren, Brandon Parence, Courtnry Thomas, Marcus (Kelly) Parence and Regina Thomas; and her four great-grandchildren, Brielle Thomas, Jayden Parence, Zoey Parence and Paisley Parence.
Cozzetta was a child of God and she loved and served Him until she when home to be with Him. Her favorite verse was, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.”
