Daniel Edward Derieg

August 10th, 1935 - August 31st, 2024

Daniel Edward Derieg, born on August 10, 1935, in Rock Springs, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2024, in Meridian, Idaho, at the age of 89.

Daniel grew up in Lovell, Wyoming, where he developed a deep sense of commitment and service, values that would define his entire life. While in college, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. He entered the flight program in Pensacola, Florida, and was serving as a flight instructor when he met and married the love of his life, Sandra Leverett, on August 15, 1964. They lived a happy and committed life together and had just celebrated their 60-year anniversary before his passing.

Throughout his distinguished military career, Daniel served in various locations, including Florida, Whidbey Island, Washington, the Azores, Okinawa, and Hawaii. His career was marked by dedication and excellence, ultimately leading to his retirement as a Lieutenant Commander. His service was honored with the Meritorious Service Medal, recognizing his outstanding achievements and dedication to his duties. Daniel’s years as a Navy pilot were a defining period in his life. For the rest of his days, he saw himself as an officer and a pilot—identities that shaped his character and his approach to life. His love of flying and his military service were a source of pride for him and his family.

Daniel and Sandra settled in Woodinville, Washington, northeast of Seattle, where he retired from the Navy and where they built a life surrounded by their growing family. Daniel was a devoted father to six children: Patrick Daniel Derieg, Brian Leslie Derieg, Christopher Edward Derieg (wife Angela), Colin Mathew Derieg, James Michael Derieg (wife Rebekah), and Jennifer Anne Derieg. His love and guidance shaped their lives, and his legacy continues through them. Tragically, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Brian.

In 1999, Daniel and Sandra, and their daughter Jennifer, moved to Meridian, Idaho, where they found a welcoming community filled with friends and fellowship. It became their cherished home, a place where Daniel felt peace and connection. He took up woodworking as a hobby, crafting beautiful furniture that filled their home with warmth and love.

A man of deep faith, Daniel was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His commitment to God and community was evident in his service to his church and community. During 25 years living in Woodinville Washington, Daniel served in many capacities in the 2nd ward, and ultimately as a bishop for 6 years, where he provided spiritual guidance and support to countless individuals. His unwavering conviction and deep faith were foundational in his life and were evident in the way he raised and guided his family. In the face of the difficult health challenges he encountered in his later years, Daniel displayed remarkable courage and resilience. Throughout it all, he was patient and leaned on his Heavenly Father, trusting fully in His divine plan.

Daniel will be remembered as an honorable and honest man, a devoted husband, a loving father, a patriot, and a dedicated servant of God. He leaves behind his wife, Sandra, his sons Patrick, Christopher, Colin, and James, and his daughter Jennifer, along with many other beloved family members and friends.

Daniel Derieg’s life was a testament to his love for God, family, and country. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
