Daniel Thomas Hannan
July 24th, 1946 - April 9th, 2015
Daniel passed away peacefully at the age of 68 on April 9, 2015 in Centralia, Washington. He was born July 24, 1946 in Houston, Texas, the son of Charles and Cecilia Hannan. Dan was the ninth of their ten children and the family eventually relocated to Portland, Oregon. Dan graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1964, and attended Portland State University. He married Karol Alvord on November 2, 1980 in Centralia. Dan began his career as a merchandiser for Montgomery Ward in Portland, Oregon until 1978, a job he truly disliked. Fortunately, Dan demonstrated his leadership skills while organizing a company softball team and was promoted to manager of the Centralia Montgomery Ward store, which he ran until all the catalog stores closed in 1985. In 1987, he opened Hannan Auto Sales, his “dream job,” which he operated for 19 years until a stroke necessitated his early retirement in June 2005. Dan loved a great joke and a captive audience, which is one reason he preferred sitting at the kids’ table during Thanksgiving dinner. He was loved by many for his outgoing personality, story- telling ability and amazing breakfasts. Dan lived life to the fullest and took his family on many adventures – usually on a shoestring budget, in a car that barely made the journey. He enjoyed vintage cars, traveling, fishing, reading, camping, and gardening. He played the guitar and had a wonderful singing voice. He also performed in several plays at the Evergreen Playhouse, which is where he met his wife, Karol. He is survived by his wife, Karol Alvord of Centralia; sons, David (Julie) Hannan, Jim (Chris) Hannan; daughter, Sara (Jay) Mahnke; four grandchildren, Evan, Nathan, Lindsey and Natalie; brothers, Pat Hannan, Tim Hannan, and Bill Hannan; and sisters, Mary Dooling and Fran Hannan. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Michael Hannan, and Charles Hannan; and sisters, Ruth Klein, and Theresa Barrett. The family would like to thank Dan’s caregiver, Eilean Blowers, who provided kind and consistent care to him for the past eight years. Dan was a wonderful husband, father and friend who touched and influenced many lives. He will be greatly missed. Please leave memories of Dan or condolences for his family in the Guestbook below.
