Daniel Hartwig

Daniel Raymond Hartwig (Dale), age 81 passed away on March, 15, 2013 at his home in Crow, Oregon, from Progressive Supranucler Palsy. Dale was born on December 17, 1931 in Vida, Oregon to Charles Duncan Hartwig and Eva Matilda (Gates) Hartwig. He was the seventh child of ten.Shortly after Dale was born his family moved several times around the state of Oregon. Dale attended grades one thru six in Gervis, Oregon and grades seven and eight at Five Rivers, Oregon. After Dale finished his freshman year at Walport High School the family moved to Crow, Oregon. Dale never finished school because he went to work logging with a cousin to help his younger siblings finish their schooling. This is when "Smith and Hartwig" Logging Co. was formed. Dale also was employed with the Lane County Sherriff's office as a Deputy and retired after 29 years of service. He also had 11 months active military service.Dale married Bernice Marie Canaday in 1952 at Vaughn, Oregon. They were happily married for 60 years. Dale enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, and working his land.Dale is survived by his wife, Bernice of Crow, Oregon, his children, Debra Hartwig of Eugene, Oregon, Linda Sledge, Daniel (Danny) Hartwig and Karen Ott all of Crow. Four of his siblings, Eveyln Carpenter of Los Angeles, CA, Robert Hartwig of Veneta, Betty Waits of Mesa, AZ , and LeRoy Hartwig of Portland, OR. Dale has seven grandchildren, John Sullivan of Monroe, OR, Travis Smith of Crow, Tami Bloom of Eugene, Kelli Weese of Florence, Jessica Hartwig of Crow, Shawn and Joe Ott both of Crow. He has six great-grand kids. Braeden Sledge, Logan and Rhianna Weese, Brogan and Amira Smith and Eli Ott.Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Eva Hartwig, siblings, Edna Witten, Leona Everest, Clifford Hartwig, Helen Dennis, and Darlene Wooten, and three grandchildren, Brett Hartwig, Marcy Smith and Tara Smith.A burial will be held at the Gate's Cemetery in Crow, Saturday, March 23rd at 11:00 AM, followed by a celebration of life and potluck at the Crow Grange Hall at Noon.
