Daniel McNeill
May 17th, 1932 - October 7th, 2012
Daniel Brown McNeill ?Brown? ?Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.? Psalm 19:14 Daniel Brown McNeill, 80, passed peacefully away on October 7, 2012 at his home in Charlotte, NC. Brown, the son of the late W.C. and Katherine Tiddy McNeill was born May 17, 1932 in Laurinburg, NC. He served in the U.S. Army in postwar Germany in the 1950?s. After earning a BA from USC and an MA from ASU, he taught history in the 1960?s. In 1974, he opened MacNeil?s, the first business in the new Overstreet Mall. It became an uptown landmark for over 30 years until illness forced him to close it in 2006. His engaging charm earned him a strong clientele locally and among business and entertainment folks throughout the U.S. He and his friend Bill spent many happy years traveling the world in search of the beautiful rare books which became his shop?s hallmark. He loved exploring the byways of London and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Bavarian Alps. Brown is survived by his friend and partner of 46 years, William E. Hodgson of Charlotte, NC; sister, Katherine Webb of Linville, NC; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Donna Bousquet and Edrenna Cousar; his beloved caregivers, Yvonne Mincer, Jim Lawton and Maggie White along with the gang at the Dowd Y and many wonderful friends who supported him and his family through his last difficult months. Brown is preceded in death by his brothers, William, Archie, John and Edwin and his sisters, Sarah and Mary Ruth. The Reverend Dennis Quakenboss of Mountainside Lutheran Church in Linville, NC and the Reverend Charles Howell of Speedwell Presbyterian Church of Reidsville, NC will officiate at his memorial service on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Parkinson?s Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509 New York, NY 10018 or A Child?s Place, PO Box 33302, Charlotte, NC 28233. He steadfastly lived by his two favorite verses from scripture. ?This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it? Psalm 118:24
