Danny L. Carroll

Danny Lee Carroll, 68, of Sacramento, died on May 10, 2021, after a year-long fight with pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully with his family by his side. Dan was born on October 23, 1952, in Garden City, Kansas to Charles and Wanda Carroll. He graduated from Calistoga High School in 1970, and later, moved to Sacramento, to attend U.C. Davis, where he received his undergraduate degree and his teaching credential. He taught English at Casa Grande High School in Petaluma for several years, before returning to U.C. Davis to attend law school. After graduating from law school in 1982, he spent a year clerking for Justice Warren Matthews of the Supreme Court of Alaska. After his clerkship, Dan returned to Sacramento and began working at Downey Brand LLP, where he spent his entire legal career as an associate and partner. He later served, from 1997 to 2020, as the firm’s in-house general counsel. For over fifteen years, Dan was actively involved as a volunteer coach for the Elk Grove High School Mock Trial team. Dan took pride in preparing the team breakfast for its Saturday practices. He compiled favorite recipes at the end of each year, into a cookbook, which was given to the graduating seniors on the team. His “Cheesy Biscuit” recipe was loved by many. Dan loved to travel and experience new places with his family and friends, including numerous trips throughout the United States. In 2017, Dan and his wife Cindy traveled to Germany and Italy with a group from St. John’s Lutheran Church. In 2019, they took a cruise through the Panama Canal. Dan’s favorite place by far was Sedona, Arizona, having spent numerous vacations there with Cindy, their family, and friends. Dan was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in midtown Sacramento. He served on the church council, numerous committees, and was a lector on many Sundays. Dan is survived by his wife Cindy, of 35 years; his son and daughter-in-law, Bradley and Anahe Carroll; daughter Leah Carroll; sisters Debra Carroll and Pamela Tingle and nephew Lance Tingle & Jacob Vartan. A Celebration of Life service will be held for Dan, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund, Sutter Hospice, or Elk Grove High School Mock Trial.
