David E. Burgio
August 9th, 1943 - August 21st, 2022
David E. Burgio, 79, beloved husband of Peggy Burgio, died on Sunday, August 21, 2022 in Lexington, KY. He was born on August 9, 1943 on Staten Island, NY to the late Joseph and Margaret Burgio. David received both his Bachelors (1965) and Masters (1991) degrees from the University of Kentucky. For the majority (29 years) of his professional career he was the President and CEO of Berea Hospital. David was also a Kidney transplant recipient for just over 26 years. David was a multi-Olympic medalist in swimming at the Transplant Olympics many years running, and an active participant and committee member of the Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA). In addition to his wife Peggy, he is survived by his son, Dr. David (Michelle) Burgio, Jr., Liberty Township, OH; his daughter, Renee Burgio, Lexington, KY; three grandchildren, Lauren Taylor McDonald, William David McDonald and Thalia Danielle (Max) Messmer; and two great-grandchildren, Alice Ruth Messmer and Emmett Ralph Messmer. A gathering of family and friends will be 3pm-5pm Wed., August 24, 2022 at Clark Legacy Center – Brannon Crossing followed by a brief service at 5pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) at https://donatelifeky.org/financial-contributions/ or Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation at https://pkdcure.org/give/.
